That’s true… not long ago the Sofa funds were down to £0.63

StarShipSofa won the Hugo in 2010, part of the District of Wonders Network – things couldn’t have been better… then we hit rock bottom and it could have all gone horribly wrong!

Actually, £0.63 was not the true amount – we did have £7.63 and then I watched on UK television Comic Relief – this is a yearly charity fundraiser set up some twenty years ago by UK comedian Lenny Henry. So, I sat and watched and cried like most and decided to give. I was surprised to see just how little was in the account… £7.63. Not much to give… and certainly not much to carry on with a broadcasting network… even one that has won a Hugo:0)

But… and I’ve heard this saying many times…I ‘paid it forward’. I donated £7 to Comic Relief and knew it was the right thing to do. I did the right thing… it wasn’t much but two things happened then… First, I’d helped in my small way, helped a child or family get a little boost in life. Second, I felt good. I had helped… I felt better for it… much better… I paid it forward and the feelings I got were so much better than if I’d just hung on the the £7.

So… can you see where this is going? I’m asking you… in a small but important way…. to Pay if Forward. Keep the Sofa going!

We have so much to give and so many glorious years left to discover amazing things… but we need funding in order to survive.

It’s my intention to add one of these to each and every StarShipSofa show, which I’m calling First Chapters. The Sofa is released each and every week. It’s your chance for a little exposure.

So… here’s what I’m after. It can be any kind of science fiction or fantasy. It has to be an mp3, mono, 128kbps and 10mins long. I also need attached to the beginning of the narration, a couple of mins of you plugging your book – informing the Sofa listeners what will happen in the book, when the book is out, how much it is and where to buy it.

A word of warning about audio quality! Make it the best recording you can. A clean audio file is what we are after. If your mp3 file has excessive amounts of hiss or word stumbles, explosives (words beginning with P or B) paper rustling – it won’t get played.

Well, truth is I like it – I like it a lot.

The Fancast feels like its the right place to put something like StarShipSofa, The Coode Street Podcast, Galactic Suburbia Podcast, SF Signal Podcast, SF Squeecast and all the other great genre podcasts out there. I didn’t think this at first but now I have had time to reflect. It feels right. We now have a place to call our own in this whirlwind that is the Hugo Awards.

In 2010 when StarShipSofa got herself nominated for a Hugo in the Best Fanzine category the amount of negative vibes and comments about how a podcast was not a fanzine was simply staggering. I was not prepared for it. Thankfully, I had a few shoulders to lean on, especially Cheryl Morgan, who in my eyes has done more for the bringing together digital and print factions than any other single person I know. Before any of this new breed of podcaster or blogger (I include StarShipSofa in this group), Cheryl and her Emerald City (1995 – 2006) blog were there banging the drum for us all to march to. We have a lot to thank Cheryl for – I especially. Thank you Cheryl.

So, are we agreed? Is the Fancast the best place for podcasts? I think so. Will we be happy? I hope, though I suspect some will still grumble, and saying all that, I will be one of the first to grumble the loudest if the Fancast is not voted back next year.

Award-winning writer and narrator, Lawrence Santoro began writing dark tales at age five.

In 2001 his novella “God Screamed and Screamed, Then I Ate Him” was nominated for a Bram Stoker Award. In 2002, his adaptation and audio production of Gene Wolfe’s “The Tree Is My Hat,” was also Stoker nominated. In 2003, his Stoker-recommended “Catching” received Honorable Mention in Ellen Datlow’s 17th Annual “Year’s Best Fantasy and Horror” anthology. In 2004, “So Many Tiny Mouths” was cited in the anthology’s 18th edition. In the 20th, his novella, “At Angels Sixteen,” from the anthology A DARK AND DEADLY VALLEY, was similarly honored.

Larry’s first novel, “Just North of Nowhere,” was published in 2007. A collection of his short fiction, DRINK FOR THE THIRST TO COME, was published in 2011. He lives in Chicago and is working on two new novels, “Griffon and the Sky Warriors,” and “A Mississippi Traveler, or Sam Clemens Tries the Water”

Gregory Frost

Gregory Frost is the acclaimed and best-selling author of the YA-crossover “Shadowbridge” duology, voted one of the top four fantasy novels by the American Library Association in 2009. Shadowbridge was also a finalist for the James Tiptree Award.  Paul Witcover in SciFi Weekly called the books “”A master class on storytelling and myth-making by a gifted writer working at the top of his game.”” Frost’s books for adults include Fitcher’s Brides (Tor Books), one of the “fairy tale” series edited by Terri Windling, and Nebula-nominated science fiction novel The Pure Cold Light (Avon/ROC UK).

James Patrick Kelly

James Patrick Kelly has had an eclectic writing career. He has written novels, short stories, essays, reviews, poetry, plays and planetarium shows. His most recent book, a collection of stories, entitled The Wreck Of The Godspeed, was published in the summer of 2008. His short novel Burn won the Science Fiction Writers of America’s Nebula Award in 2007. He has won the World Science Fiction Society’s Hugo Award twice: in 1996, for his novelette “Think Like A Dinosaur” and in 2000, for his novelette, “Ten to the Sixteenth to One.” His fiction has been translated into eighteen languages. With John Kessel he is co-editor of The Secret History Of Science Fiction, Feeling Very Strange: The Slipstream Anthology and Rewired: The Post Cyberpunk Anthology. He writes a column on the internet for Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine and is on the faculty of the Stonecoast Creative Writing MFA Program at the University of Southern Maine and the Board of Directors of the Clarion Foundation. He produces two podcasts: James Patrick Kelly’s StoryPod on Audible and the Free Reads Podcast. His website is www.jimkelly.net.

Michael Swanwick is one of the most acclaimed and prolific science fiction and fantasy writers of his generation. He has received a Hugo Award for fiction in an unprecedented five out of six years and has been honored with the Nebula, Theodore Sturgeon, and World Fantasy Awards as well as receiving nominations for the British Science Fiction Award and the Arthur C. Clarke Award. He has just finished a new novel, DANCING WITH BEARS, featuring post-Utopian confidence artists Darger and Surplus, which will be published by Night Shade Books in May 2011.

Sheila Williams

Sheila Williams has been the editor of Asimov’s Science Fiction magazine since 2005. She is also the editor or co-editor of twenty-six anthologies. the most recent of which—Enter a Future: Fantastic Tales from Asimov’s Science Fiction—is available as an electronic download exclusively from Amazon. Sheila is also the co-founder of the Dell Magazines Award for Undergraduate Excellence in Science Fiction and Fantasy Writing, which is given out each year in Orlando, Florida, by the International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts. She lives in New York City with her husband and two daughters.

David Mercurio Rivera

Mercurio D. Rivera’s science fiction stories have appeared or are forthcoming in numerous markets such as Unplugged: The Year’s Best Online Fiction, edited by Rich Horton, Interzone, Black Static, Nature, Electric Velocipede, Abyss and Apex, Sybil’s Garage, Aoife’s Kiss,Otherworlds Anthology and Northwest Passages: A Cascadian Anthology. Mercurio has been a member of the highly regarded Manhattan writing group Altered Fluid since 2004.  He is proud to call this talented team of the brightest, up-and-coming genre writers in the SF/fantasy/horror.

Greetings from a loyal San Francisco subscriber!

I work close to the San Francisco Bay waterfront and yesterday I was out at lunch, carrying my copy of the Captain’s Log and listening to the latest Then and Now episode, I had just finished listening to Phillip Jose Farmer’s tale about the aliens and the rocket ships. When I reached the waterfront and looked up I saw this being 40’ tall rocket being installed.
