Hi all,

As a supporting member of Renovation I am eligible to nominate for the 2012 Hugo Awards. As there are many categories in which I have little first-hand knowledge, I thought I would list what I’m currently considering nominating and open this up to suggestions from Sofanauts who are not intending to purchase a membership for Chicon.

I can’t promise I’ll nominate everything you suggest (for starters,there’s a limit of 5 nominations per category), but I think this is a good way to provide exposure for candidates who might not get a nomination otherwise. I do encourage you to get at least a supporting membership for Chicon: the voter pack of works is worth it alone!

P.S. The nominating deadline is 11th March!

Fantastic idea! This will help me prepare for sending my nominations, too.

A couple of ideas:

Human.4 (also published as 0.4) by Mike Lancaster

Best Dramatic Presentation (Long Form)
Another Earth

Best Dramatic Presentation (Short Form)
“Lysergic Acid Diethylamide” episode of Fringe

(note: NESFA is putting Attack the Block in this category, as it’s only 88 minutes long)

Thanks for the pointers Amy. Also, I didn’t realise ‘short form’ mean shorter than 90 minutes. I don’t think ‘Attack the Block’ has a chance of winning against the more established serials like Doctor Who, but it was a fun night out.

Anyone else has any suggestions?

I hesitate to mention this, for fear of sounding utterly self-serving, but Fringe Science: Parallel Universes, White Tulips, and Mad Scientists, edited by Kevin R. Grazier (BenBella Books), is eligible for Best Related Work.

I’m pleased to say it’s received positive reviews; I’m especially proud of it because it represents such a wide range of contributors from across the SF community in conversation, from SF authors like Nick Mamatas, to MIT scientists and professional science writers, to SF scholars like me. You can see more information on the contributors and essays here.

I expect the frontrunner this year in this category will be that new Doctor Who book on the Davies era, or Daniel Kimmel’s Jar Jar Binks Must Die, both of which have received a lot of popular attention.

And with that, I’ll be quiet now (at last! ha). :wink:

Self serving? When did you acquire this oh-so-British approach to highlighting your achievements? ;)

I hereby kick off the ‘Let’s Get Amy a Hugo‘ campaign (yes, I know you wouldn’t get to pick the trophy up and keep it, but it’d be pretty close…)

Re ‘Attack the Block’ the rules allow for works to be moved from one category to another if they are deemed to fit there better, AtB would almost certainly be moved to Long Form;

I am a voter, so I won’t contribute my own suggestions, but I do recommend the following resources for those who are voting, or want to offer their own input;

Of the 4 long forms Attack the Block is by far the most interesting film – and probably the most flawed. I don’t think it will win and of the others I think Source Code is the next best.

I predict Super 8 will win because of the amount of media exposure given to that film.

I don’t understand the how or the why moving it to the short form. It’s an ehhhh long form piece.
