The official Hugo Awards website has announced that the nominations period for the 2012 awards is now open.

I see that Chicon 7 has exercised its right under the WSFS Constitution to add a Special Category for 2012. The additional award category is Best Fancast, defined as “Any non-professional audio- or video-casting with at least four (4) episodes that had at least one (1) episode released in 2011.” (There is an amendment to the WSFS Constitution pending ratification at Chicon 7 that would make Best Fancast a permanent category.)

I have made my feelings clear on the Fancast category in a separate post, and, given that this is a one-off category pending a change in the constitution, it means that the other category definitions have not been changed. I therefore intend to nominate the Sofa in both the Fanzine and Fancast categories and hope all those of you who are able (or willing) to nominate, do the same.

BUMP! :)

Just submitted my nominations. Among these, I nominated StarShipSofa in both Fanzine and Fancast categories.

Wouldn’t it be something if Larry got to pick up the Sofa’s Hugo in Chicago?

Any-hoo, the Hugo voter pack was amazing to get as always – well worth the price of a supporting membership.

Nominators/voters, get on over there and do the thing we do!

You get a voter pack of eligible works? I thought the voter pack was later for everything that had been nominated.

That’d be helpful, I’d like to get a supporting membership but I’m exactly sure what is all eligible, are there any good lists out there of what works are eligible?

Sorry, shouldn’t have posted while sleepy. I wish you got a voter pack of eligible works for nomination, but that would literally be everything produced in the genre all year! ;)

I was kind of mooshing two subjects together in my post – whoops. Broken out and explained better, they are:

1. If you can nominate (you were a member of Renovation last year or you’re a member of Chicon this year), please do!

2. The voter pack members get each year (generally containing all the works nominated or samples thereof) is cool. I loved mine from last year, and on its merits became a member of Chicon this year. Everybody, nominate good stuff so the voter pack will rock! Well worth the $50USD for the supporting membership.

Ha, I don’t know when I’d find the time, but I could go for a copy of every eligible work! :)

I’m assuming the most of the voter pack media are in a format I could read on my Kindle?

Last year’s packet had lots of pdf and epub files, and the occassional Word document (for shorter works) and jpegs for images. Often written works were included in two formats. I don’t know Kindle, but I didn’t run into any trouble at all on my PC and very little with my iPod.

I so need an iPad if I’m going to take up e-reading . . .

Thanks Robyn, I signed up for a supporting membership, now I need to figure what to nominate!

Those files will work on the Kindle Fire at least, I have Aldiko on my Kindle and Android phone, works great as a bookshelf for all my non-Amazon eBooks.

My wife and I got ourselves a Kindle Fire for the holidays. I was a little skeptical about it, I don’t really like the software, I wish it had the full Android OS. But I like the hardware, the 7 inch screen is a handy size, large enough to read comfortably but small enough to fit in a pocket or read with one hand. The best feature is being able to read in the dark though, it’s handy when my wife and kids are asleep and I’m skulking around the house!

Just two days left! If you want to nominate works for the Hugos this year, you need to get your Chicon attending or supporting membership by Jan 31. Don’t let the opportunity pass you by!

(Unless you were a member last year. If you were, you can nominate this year, but you can’t vote when the time comes unless you get your Chicon membership . . .)

Looks like George RR Martin agrees with me about the Fancast category!
