I think this one got lost in the forum migration:
Coming Up
Main Fiction: The Martian Chronicles Pt 1 by Cory Doctorow 01:50
Promo: Sherlock and Science Fiction by Amy H Sturgis 50:50
Vintage Serial: Exit Center Stage Pt 1 57:55
Fact: Movie Soundtracks by David Raiklen 01:16:20
Life On Mars
Tales To Terrify
Narrator: Jeff Lane, Peter Seaton Clark
Anyway, just wanted to say that on the basis of that initial instalment, I’m definitely adding Cory’s story to my Hugo nomination list. Jeff Lane does a great job with it too – thanks go to his Mrs for letting him record it over the Christmas period.
I’m not able to attend Amy’s lecture on Sherlock, but it sounds fascinating; I hope the interest shown at the convention panel is replicated with the talk.
The Sherlock serial was fun, although the jokes fell a little flat for me – they seemed a little too strained.
Big thanks to David Raiklen for another fabulous episode of Movie Soundtracks. Bernard Hermann (who also wrote the original theme to the Twilight Zone, though not the one you’re thinking of) has been in the news recently as part of his score for Vertigo was used in the (mostly) silent film The Artist (which I thoroughly recommend, by the way) and which not everyone was happy about. One of the excerpts played by David, called Space Control, is more reminiscent of horror films, with the bells and haunting theremin melody, than science fiction films.

Cory’s extended treatment of vomiting in zero-G reminded me of the “sick kits” scene in Heinlein’s Space Cadet. I wonder if it was a coincidence, an unconscious borrowing, or an overt homage (or maybe even, more simply, a rip-off).
