How do the tags work here? I’ve noticed some tags for topics only used twice are always on the hot list and some with at least 10 or 15 references NEVER show up. They also never seem to appreciably change with use. Are they working correctly or have they purposely been set to be more or less static??? |

The size of the tags is dependent on the number of times they have been used, big tags have many items, small tags have very few. On the homepage of the forum, I think it also takes time into consideration, so a tag with a lot of items might not show up if it has not been used recently, and a tag with just one item might show up if it is brand new. All of the tags, regardless of the age and quantity, should show up on the tag page though. But I will check into how tags work to make sure nothing is amiss. |

You might start by looking at the single topic tags on the front page… Bear is one topic and from a month ago. There are lots of single topic tags more recent that do not show. So it just seems there is something going on there. I like to use tags to find hot (in the sense of recent activity) notes so that’s why I noticed the anomalies. |

I am having a little trouble understanding the value that the tag “Asimov: Incontinent Zitbrain” serves. It is completely unrelated to any post that it is applied to. Perhaps just causing Asimov fans to cringe was what the tag’s creator had in mind. Obviously not a few people have clicked on it, hence the overbearing font. I know that the tags will eventually “sort themselves out”, but it possible to moderate this in some way? |

I don’t think clicking on a tag changes anything. One has to use it as a tag on topics for the tag to gain in rank. The more topics with that tag, the higher the rank. At least that is how it seems to usually work. I think there are still some glitches in the settings. Tags should really be linked to messages instead of topics. Yeah, the 2 Asimov tags are a pain. Obviously somebody has a weird sense of humour. |

Weird sense of humor is practically a requirement around here. (Not responsible for the above mentioned tags.) |

The short answer is that its value is priceless. The longer answer is that that tag (in one form or another) is one I have applied to every post I have ever posted to this forum. I.e., it’s just me, subverting the tag paradigm and repurposing it for my own nefarious ends. Bwa, ha, ha. |

And by the way, I second the motion that the “Hot Tags” list be debugged. “Witchcraft sci-fi”???? Why is that one still “hot”? The last time it was used was 4 months ago. |

Sorry, that sounds a little entitled. I should have said, debugged at the convenience of our web guy, of course, he to whom we owe much thanks. |

The squeaky wheel gets the grease I upgraded the hot tags on the homepage of the forums. It now only shows tag activity for the last month, and the tags are weighted based on the last month’s activity. That should resolve “Witchcraft sci-fi”, but “Asimov” has been a bit, um, active in the last month… This doesn’t affect the tag page, which shows all the tags and is weighted by overall activity. |

The grease seems to have made the tags totally invisible everywhere. Also the log in/out areas are gone. On opening a new thread I find I am still logged in and the log in/out and tag area does show but at the bottom of the forum page. So, in part, there may be a formatting problem. I’m using Firefox if that is a factor. |

I swear they are there! I had to make some changes to the design, if you refresh your browser it should look ok. |

Restarting Firefox brought them back. Refreshing the browser didn’t work. Neither did manually clearing the cache. Thanks for the work. Now if we could only convince FredO’…. |
