Thoughts? Can this sustain a seven-show run? Is it creepy enough? Does it have a brain? Will we thrill to see all the clever ways in which POV cameras can catch intimate conversations and avoid seeing the critters of the forest and the waters?

And where has everyone been!?

Not sure about everybody else, but I’ve been trapped in the Engine Room :)

I haven’t heard of that show, but I’m looking forward to The Walking Dead on Sunday. It’s not the post apocalyptic show that I want, but I’ll take what I can get…

I watched it.

In a nutshell?

Interesting concept ruined by the found footage gimmick.

Oh and the poor characterisations.
And the cliche tropes.

I more of less agree, gav. To be fair, though, it’s a bit early to say how cliche-ridden the tropes are. Not all is revealed. I suspect you may be right, though. Of course this is not s.f. and the goal is to stimulate visceral effects and not enlightenment or intellection; “Creature from the Black Lagoon,” not “Forbidden Planet.”

Thing is Larry, the more I think about the show the more I find myself questioning it.

Spoiler White text start

Why did the creepy dolls only ever move or do creepy things for the cameras?
And why did the cameras get stored in the foliage? Considering that the nearest power source was down in the boat why weren’t the cameras off?

Why does Tess Cole keep running around shouting “Save Emmett” before being put in Jeopardy

End spoiler.

And do you know the thing that really annoys me… why does everyone call the boat The MAGGUS? Gah, it’s MAYgus – dummies. You’ve only been on that thing for 30 years figure it out.

One of the things that made me laugh – thought I am sure it is a deliberate allusion – is that the Jacques Cousteau style is called “The Undiscovered Country”. I don’t think it’s a Trek ref. I think it’s a ref to the original source and will come in to play later.

I sound like a complete whinger but there’s stuff I do like.

The cast.
Bruce Greenwood is always good. I wish they had kept the found footage conceit to his … found footage … where it would have made sense.
The rest of the Cast is pretty good except for Tess and “stock pretty girl”. I like the German mercenary and the camera crew.

Atmosphere
I like the actual atmosphere and that the monster of the week isn’t really shown. It’s creepy and appropriate. It’s courageous and invites the viewer to engage their brains. Some of of the jumps are obvious but I think that’s par for this sort of show.

Please please please don’t let it be like Lost. I hated that show.

The Indigenous magic stuff.
I wish they made more play on this, but maybe that’s coming down the line. I’m hoping for some sort of Aztec-ish god-myth-magic thing. That would make it interesting and separate it from the rest of the pack.

Overall it’s only 8 episodes so I am willing to follow it to the end. If nothing else it’s something a bit different.

I’ve watched it on Hulu. A bit too much like Blair Witch but I’ll probably watch the rest of the episodes. As you say at least it is something different.
