Science Fiction Podcast StarShipSofa Changes Name; Requests Submissions of Short Science Fiction Stories

StarshipSofa Podcast has changed its name to StarShipSofa: Science Fiction Audio Magazine. Host/Producer Tony Smith says the name change signifies a format direction for the audio programme, specifically the Wednesday night "Aural Delights".

StarshipSofa Podcast has changed its name to StarShipSofa: Science Fiction Audio Magazine. Host/Producer Tony Smith says the name change signifies a format direction for the audio programme, specifically the Wednesday night "Aural Delights".

The format for these shows will be: introduction; featured short story; poetry; science facts; flash fiction; and feedback from previous shows. Another change in consideration is possibly having a monthly editorial in the weekend show. "[We are] following in the great traditions of Analog, Asimov and F&SF", said Smith. The "Aural Delights" program features a science fiction story from recognized authors read by professional and semi-pro narrators. Tony also announced he is seeking submissions for flash fiction, short 600 word stories within the science fiction "blur". Authors may submit their works to starshipsofa@gmail.com. StarShipSofa has requested that an author limit their submissions to one work for consideration at a time, to give others an opportunity to have their stories promoted also.

StarShipSofa: Science Fiction Audio Magazine is a bi-weekly podcast that asks listeners to voyage into the deepest realms of the classic Sci-fi and science fiction world. The "Aural Delights" programme has recently featured stories by Kage Baker, Spider Robinson, Gywneth Jones, and Joe Halderman. You can subscribe from the Itunes Music Store or at http://www.starshipsofa.com/rss/. Upcoming projects include a video on Michael Moorcock. http://www.StarShipSofa.com

Going Ok

Just thought I'd give you an update on how things are settling down, here on board the good-ship SOFA.

To be honest... the first couple of shows which I put out by myself were really hard to do... not in terms of content or style... just in the terms of... can I do this? Well... now I have a few under my belt, it seems as if I've settled into a rhythm and everything feels OK. The controls of the ship are big... but I know enough of how to pilot her to get away with it - well, to a standard anyway. If you feel there's something missing, drop me a line. It's always nice to hear from you.

I know it will be strange for some who rely on the fact that there was some nice banter between myself and the Boy Wonder... but hopefully I can, at least... keep it topped up with enthusiastic waffle!

I'll leave that to your emails to inform me if I'm doing OK in that department...

As Ever,

Tony C Smith

Forgot Again!

Now this is really silly of me!

For the second time in two weeks I have forgot to put links on the site to James J. Campanella's website Uvulaaudio . It is James who is our fine narrator of the Bruce Sterling story, David Brin's and two in the future by Kevin J Anderson and John Kessel. So please... for my sake... pop over to Jim's site and say hello.

Sorry Jim.

Boing Boing

Look who got themselves onto Boing Boing? Now isn't that nice?

Brin

This week, we have none other than David Brin's 1985 Hugo Award winning story Crystal Spheres on audio. Let me know what you think and if you enjoyed it. Email me.

Uploads

Sorry for the delay in getting the David Brin story out... it should have went up Wednesday but for some reason Libsyn's have some faults with their internal workings... so I'm having to hoc up another way to get it out.

Mixers

Why me?

Do you know how many mixing desks I've been through? Well since 15/01/08 that figure is now 4! Bloody 4... how is that? Do I burn the things out or are they made so naff... they just won't last the punishment the SOFA demands. I'm not sure but now it's becoming a joke. I'm holding out for this new replacement...  I have a good  feeling about  this one. Lets hope so anyways. Blast Off!

Email

Got myself a bunch of lovely emails covering all aspects of the show. It seems everyone is keen and more than happy to have a show dedicated to a particular book, which has really pleased me. I honestly thought the majority of people would be against having such a show as it would spoil the book for them but all have stated that in their lifestyles at the moment, they might not have the time to read particular books. So, I guess this is the next best thing - leave it to me, in telling you what the ending is!

Got myself a lovely email from a gentleman called Michael McDonald from Japan. Michael brought my attention to a writer I had not heard about:

Mr. Matthew Hughes has recently had the book ‘The Gist Hunter & Other Stories’ published.  I am familiar with his work from the short stories in Fantasy and Science Fiction, which were wonderful.  He is truly a literary craftsman, and writes in a style very like that of Charles Dickens.  The main character of his ‘Gist Hunter’ stories, Henghis Hapthorne, is somewhat like a futuristic version of Sherlock Holmes (with magical elements thrown in for good measure).  The stories are largely science fiction based, but with elements of magic and the supernatural included.  Every time I read a story by him, I make a mental note to send off a note to you guys, and now I have.

I have been in touch with Matt Hughes and he has kindly allowed the SOFA to narrate two of his short stories - so look out for those in the coming weeks. They sound excellent tales.
